Place in Bellflower

There was a six-month period back in 2008 when there were no coffee shops or cafés near downtown Bellflower. I was devastated. As a twenty-something, a cool local hangout is almost necessary for my happiness. If I wanted to have a cup of coffee with friends at a place with a good vibe & friendly atmosphere, I'd have to drive twenty minutes down to Long Beach. Perhaps I'm idealistic, but I think everyone should have a nice local café within walking distance of their home... even in Southern California.

Imagine my joy when I met Omar & Angelica and heard about their plans for the old Perks Coffee House on Belmont. When they shared all the details and creative ideas for the place, my hope for a cool Bellflower returned. (It doesn't take much.)

Not only have they created a good place for the community to mingle, the have ran a responsible business by selling organic, fair-trade coffees & teas. If you haven't already visited our place, please stop by soon.

HOW WE DECIDED TO OPEN A COFFEE HOUSE IN BELLFLOWER

Hello everyone, we thought of writing our thoughts in a blog to share them with those who wish to know about what is going on at Casa De Luna. We first want to begin by sharing how Casa De Luna came about.

Back in 2007 my partner and I were sitting at what was our favorite coffee house at the time. We were there almost every day for lunch and after work as I was going to school for my masters at the time. The coffee was not good but the atmosphere was pleasant and quiet. As I was finishing with my homework my partner revealed that he had a very bad headache as the place, although was very cozy, was a bit claustrophobic (all the windows were facing a brick wall- I wonder why???). I also shared that I felt the coffee was sour and the only reason why I liked it was because of the sofas; the place was full of sofas and mismatch tables and chair. This is how the idea of opening our own coffee house was born. We talked for hours about how we wanted a place with quality drinks (this particular coffee house had very bad lattes and a limited flavors of teas), and welcoming atmosphere with a lot of “windows”. There were many talks similar to this one held at many different coffee houses; we called this “research”, we were looking for good coffee houses and bad ones while making a list of what fitted our “ideal” place.
A series of events in my life and my partners drove us to actually begin the search for a place to open our business. REMEMBER- we had no idea of how to make a latte or even turn on a brewing machine (yes I know—push the ON button)!!! We looked at over 100 places from San Diego, Redlands and even the Valley. Some of them were nice but they were not “perfect”, we had a picture in mind and we could match it with the locations we saw.
One day when heading to San Diego to look at coffee houses for sale out there we came across the ad for this location, I was reluctant to see it (even after knowing that it was just a few miles away from home) as it was a business that was closed for more than 3 months. There were no pictures in the ad so we decided to let it go. After coming from San Diego that same day again, disappointed for the lack of “widows” in that places we visited, we decided to drive by this location. I immediately fell in love with “windows” and the patio area that led to the city park. We also looked at the location in the corner (the one were Starbucks used to be) and although it had “windows”, the space was very small for what we had in mind-furniture (let me mention that we bought the furniture, the name of the coffee house and most of the items in this place way before we found “the place”). After many conversations we agreed to put an offer on this place.
